Site Surveying and Setting Out

This CITB Assured 5-day practical course teaches the principles and practices of setting out, using the level and total station, which can be applied to all aspects of construction including earthworks, roads, buildings, foundations, piles, structural steel, structures, reinforced concrete, houses.
This course combines the content of the 2-day Levelling and setting out and the 3-day total station for construction course into a single course.
Course Content
Days 1 and 2:
- List the sources of error in taping
- Checks to eliminate error in taping
- Set out on sloping ground with a tape measure
- Set out right angles and rectangles using a tape measure
- List the sources of error in levelling
- Checks to eliminate error in levelling
- Record work to industry standard
- Carry out a live level survey
- Check the level for calibration (2 peg test)
- Set up datums to a fixed level
- Inverted staff readings for soffits
- Transfer TBM’s (temporary bench marks)
Days 3-5:
- How to set up the total station
- List the sources of error when using the total station
- Carry out calibration checks to total station
- Data management within the total station
- A guide to programmes for setting out. (stake out, reference line etc)
- Setting out various elements of construction inc. drainage, foundations and kerbs including levels and various methods of doing so
- Set up batter rails for cut and fill
- Carry out as built surveys
- Tips for faster processing of information whilst on site
